The Treacherous Troll

The Treacherous Troll

June 10th, 2024

“In the dank hollows of swamps and beneath the shadowed arches of forgotten bridges, trolls lurk—foul, fearsome, and frightfully tenacious.”

Adventurer, today we turn our gaze to one of the most persistent threats of the wilderness: the troll. These towering, hunched monstrosities are infamous not merely for their size and savagery but for their regenerative abilities, which make them a bane to even the mightiest heroes.

Appearance and Traits

Trolls are a hideous sight to behold. Their lanky, muscular frames can stretch over ten feet tall, their mottled greenish-gray skin covered in boils and scars that speak of many battles. Long, sinewy arms end in claws sharp enough to cleave through iron. Their faces, dominated by jagged fangs and sunken, malevolent eyes, suggest cruelty rather than cunning.

Yet, their most infamous feature is their unnatural vitality. Unless seared by flame or dissolved in acid, trolls’ wounds close almost as quickly as they are inflicted. Limbs severed in battle can regenerate, and stories abound of trolls whose detached hands continued to claw at their foes.

Behavior and Habits

Trolls are neither intelligent nor disciplined, relying on brute force and instinct to survive. Driven by an insatiable hunger, they devour anything they can catch, including hapless travelers, livestock, and even the bones of their prey. While they prefer solitary lives, they can sometimes be found in loose bands, drawn together by a shared hunting ground or a particularly dominant alpha troll.

Most trolls favor lairs in dark, damp places, such as caves or swamps, but they have also been known to settle under bridges, charging a “toll” of blood and gold from those who dare to pass.

Combat Tactics

When facing a troll, be prepared for a grueling fight. Here are my tips for survival:

  1. Fire and Acid are Essential: A troll’s regeneration halts only when burned or melted. Without these tools, the creature will rise again, no matter how grievous its injuries. Alchemist’s fire, torches, and spells such as Burning Hands or Acid Splash can mean the difference between life and death.
  2. Divide and Conquer: Trolls rely on overwhelming strength to overpower foes. Use ranged attacks and mobility to stay ahead of their crushing blows. If facing multiple trolls, isolate them one at a time—together, they are nearly unstoppable.
  3. Beware of Their Reach: A troll’s long arms allow them to strike farther than most melee foes. Stay alert, and don’t assume distance alone will save you.
  4. Expect Fury: Wounded trolls fight with wild abandon, lashing out in berserk fury when cornered. Always have an escape plan if the tide turns against you.

Legendary Variants

Beware, adventurer: not all trolls are born equal. Some bear additional traits, such as frost trolls of the icy north, whose chilling touch saps the strength of their prey, or venomous swamp trolls, whose claws carry a deadly poison.

Closing Thoughts

To many, trolls are the stuff of children’s tales, but the wise know better. These creatures are no mere brutes but relentless forces of nature. Arm yourself with knowledge, steel your nerves, and, most importantly, carry a good torch. For when you hear that low, guttural chuckle from the darkness, it’s already too late for regrets.

May the gods watch over you.
